Custom work is one way to get the perfect fit, however tailoring is a means to perfection as well! I had to laugh recently at myself when I took a suit to my tailor that I purchased a couple of months ago. It has been beautifully stored in a garment bag since last Spring. It was purchased to be worn in Fall/Winter and I haven't seen it since I bought it. It was like Christmas pulling it out at the tailors, I was so excited. The pants were first for hemming and pinning and then the jacket. I still had my big smile when I took the jacket off the hanger and put it on. Only to see A BIG WHITE SECURITY TAG sticking out of the side! Ok... I didn't laugh right away, Stacey who is my tailor and been with me since the beginning will attest that it was not laughter she first heard! That is a great example of a First world problem... Before I trucked off to get the tag removed, I was advised to call the store to ensure they still used the same security tags. Also, I wanted to make sure i would be let in the door, so notifying them in advance was a good idea. They were really wonderful about it, apologized and offered to cover my parking. Very impressed and quite classy as well as appreciated.
You may be wondering why is this relevant, well, being that I sometimes shop with people out of the province and country, even, it was a good reminder that it could be tricky if you weren't in the city you purchased the item in... Stores have a policy that they will only remove tags from their own stores garments. This will give you an opportunity to also leave room to see if there are any alterations required. When I first started in my business in 1995/96, I had this perception of why people wore garments that don't fit them well and many of those past perceptions have other underlying reasons to support what we see.
A client I was shopping with recently, reminded me again when she said, "you know Michelle, before you, I just would of worn this like this and felt crappy in it, which was most of the time". In my ten + years of dressing people, it isn't the settling for less that is what clients are doing, it is a combination of not noticing and being easy going, more important things to do! Gotta love the Sporty's! I can tell you that now my jacket is certainly going to fit so much better without that little white tag on the side.
