"The body is a sacred garment, It's your first and last garment; it is what you enter life in and what you depart with, and it should be treated with honour." - Martha Graham
I read Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach on an annual basis. Today, was particularly appropriate and I must say that I wanted to write about clearing your closet and opened to that particular quote! Not only in the book, but this Month of April is an appropriate time to plan for clearing. Let's start off with a suggestion I have for when you clear out your Winter garments, be careful to review what you are putting away. A year is a long time to tuck them away when you know in your gut that you will probably get rid of them anyway.
It is ironic that I am writing about this today because, we are having (hopefully the last blast of Winter) a snow storm! So, then I feel it must be the perfect time to look at this and then think about what you will be taking out for Spring/Summer. Ask yourself "does this still feel like me?"
Clearing is not an easy task because a lot of reasons pop up as to why you don't make it happen. Time, space, lack of interest, all feel like valid reasons. However, when you do take the time for yourself to take inventory and then let go, it can potentially feel as though you have been on a mini-vacation. An impetus for me to get going is that I do not have a lot of storage space that is dry. I am choosing to use this as an opportunity to continually do it in what I call the three's: consign it, gift it or toss it.
Oh, and another reason for me to do this is because the personal shopping part of my job enables me to be in the boutiques/malls/stores on a regular basis. So, when we have a seasonal changeover, I want to know that my closet is in good shape and has the space for me to buy that hot, new, amazing item!
I know you will be tempted to buy new things, but abstain if you haven't cleared. It is so natural, and I see it so often that when Spring rolls around, we are almost craving, itching to shop for lighter fabrics and colours and it is hard not to indulge. But the flip side of that is, buying without purpose/function has little holding power and the garment ends up on a hanger with either the tags still on or has only been worn once.
If you can think of clearing like this: we lessen chaos when we clear our own clutter! If I can help you lessen any chaos you may be feeling with either clearing, shopping or starting at the beginning, please visit my special packages on my website for more information.
Happy Clearing and Happy Spring!
